Providing good quality homes is not enough to create thriving and sustainable communities. As an organisation Mercian is committed to investing in local areas to help people achieve their aspirations for a better life.
It is our strategic intent and organisational purpose and values to invest in communities and neighbourhoods to:
- make a positive difference to people’s lives
- enable people to feel proud of where they live
- enable people to feel safe where they live
- enhance the quality, attractiveness and sustainability of urban living
- provide greater housing choice and flexibility for people on lower incomes
Our Residents Survey of 2003 demonstrated that people’s quality of life and comfort is affected by the quality, access to, and availability of services within local neighbourhoods and communities. These include issues such as crime, environmental services, transport, access to childcare, and employment opportunities. By working in partnership with other local service providers and agencies, our aim is to increase the life opportunities and choices available to our residents.
Our aim is to develop and support opportunities for our residents to increase their household incomes and improve their standard of living. We will therefore focus on economic and employment initiatives in key neighbourhoods in the following ways:
- Enhance residents’ employment prospects through training and development opportunities, increasing economic and social inclusion
- Continue to develop residents’ access to financial products and increase their financial security
- Support our residents being involved in their communities and having a greater say over decisions that affect them
- Build the capacity of our residents by supporting, promoting and developing a range of learning and skills development initiatives
- Seek to build links and develop relationships with a range of partners who work in the field of community investment
- Being flexible and responsive to customer and community needs to develop a sense of ownership and identity
- Finding ways to use mainstream funds, to develop and provide training and employment opportunities for residents
