Mercian Housing Appoints New Chairman

Birmingham based Mercian Housing Association has appointed Colin Small as its new Chairman. Colin will replace F. David Brooks, who is retiring after three years in the role.

Birmingham born Colin, 58, takes on this role at Mercian with nearly 30 years experience in the social housing sector.

Starting out as an accountant, his first role within housing was in 1979. He has held various positions within Midlands based associations, most recently as a Finance Director up until he finished full time work earlier this year. Colin now provides consultancy services to the housing sector as well as serving as a non-executive director for three other organisations.

Colin’s relationship with Mercian began in 2005 and he became a Board Member in 2006. Commenting on his appointment, Colin said, “When the opportunity arose to join Mercian, I jumped at the chance at being involved with the local association in the area I grew up in. I thought it was a great opportunity to give something back. The role of Chairman is both exciting and challenging but I welcome the opportunity to lead the Board at this time in Mercian’s development.

“As well as Mercian being known for their partnership work and for their innovative thinking, I want Mercian to be recognised as a major contributor to meeting the current and future needs of their customers in what is a rapidly changing environment. I am very much looking forward to taking the organisation forward.”

Laurice Ponting, Mercian’s Chief Executive commented, “Colin takes over the helm at an important stage of the association’s development. With nearly 30 years experience in the sector, Colin has a lot to offer Mercian. This is a great opportunity and we are pleased that he is taking on this role for us.”
