What a Lotta Litter!
Birmingham based Mercian Housing Association has sprung into Spring with a community litter pick event in conjunction with Sandwell Council’s Big Spring Clean campaign, at The Lyng housing estate in West Bromwich.
Lyng residents, members of staff from Mercian Housing, Groundwork UK, Sandwell Council and local Police Community Support Officers, joined together at the event which saw entertaining activities and tips on how we can be more environmentally aware, before the real fun began. Children and parents donned their yellow jackets, gloves and grabbers and set about gathering as much litter as possible from the estate.
With a fantastic 20 plus bags of litter collected, everyone gathered back at the starting point for a big pat on the back and a well deserved Easter egg for all of the children who took part.
Customer Involvement Officer at Mercian Housing, Clare Collinson said; ‘This has been a fantastic event, with lots of local families joining in to achieve something really beneficial. The Lyng is now a cleaner, safer environment to live in and community spirit is soaring.’
Sofia Constaninou, Big Spring Clean Project Officer said 'The Big Spring Clean was happy to join forces with Mercian housing to help make the Lyng Estate sparkle. The volunteer turn out was very encouraging and young people were out in force showing that they do care about where they live and they are willing to muck in and fight against littering in Sandwell.'
Mercian Housing recognises the importance and implications within communities of their commitment to improving the environment - creating opportunities for better futures for people and helping to develop communities people take pride in.
