Erdington Community Celebrates Good Neighbours Day

Yesterday Erdington residents celebrated their community spirit and neighbourhood pride in a Good Neighbours’ Day event arranged by Mercian Housing Association.

The open air event on Fentham Road was opened by the Lord Mayor of Birmingham, Lady Mayoress and Laurice Ponting, Mercian’s Chief Executive.

Many residents who turned up could find out about services available in the area and how local providers work together to improve the well-being of people living in Erdington.

There was employment and training advice on hand, as well as information on debts, managing finances and other health and family services available to residents.

Alongside the entertainment for adults and children, free energy saving light bulbs were given out and residents could meet their local police, ambulance and fire brigade crews and ask questions with regards to their work contributing to making the area a safe place to live.

The event linked to National Housing Federation’s ‘Neighbours’ Day’ initiative was aimed at allowing neighbours to meet and celebrate the diversity and cultural heritage of their community and provide valuable feedback on how their local services could be improved making them proud of where they live.

Mercian's chief executive, said: "It was fantastic to see so many Erdington people having fun on the day. We know that it is really important for people to have a sense of pride in their areas with good homes, services and access to facilities. The event brought the neighbours together, so they could celebrate the strong community spirit that exists in Erdington. As a key landlord, Mercian is committed to continue investing in this special and diverse area for the benefit of people who live here.”
